BEN CUMMINGS BIG BEAT

Ben Cummings (trumpet) has established a formidable reputation as one of Britain’s finest trumpet players. He enjoys a highly successful career as a full time musician, having played with Jacqui Dankworth, Jamie Cullum, Big Buzzard Boogie Band, NYJO, the Brass Volcanoes, Roberto Plas and his Latin Jazz Ensemble, Snowboy and the Latin Section, Bad Manners, the Humphrey Littleton band, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra. Influences include Chet Baker, Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer. Hear him at Bude this year with his own band, The Big Beat, and with Keith Nichols’ Jazz away From Home.

BEN HOLDER

He has played on various stages such as The Royal Albert Hall and BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night Is Music Night. Ben’s innate sense of swing rhythm (something which often eludes classical players) stems from those early listening sessions – and his various awards bear testimony to his abilities. He is the first call jazz violinist for many of the North’s top bands and studios.

CERI WILLIAMS

Ceri Williams (trumpet) studied at the Welsh College of Music & Drama where he became very adept at table football and pool. He has played across all musical genres but is now firmly entrenched in the field of jazz. He started with the Intercity Jazz Band in Birmingham, and he has enjoyed stints with the Beachcombers, Henry’s Bootblacks, the Keith Little Band and a whole host of others. He currently has a few projects on the go: The Good Ol’ Spit and Dribble Jass Band, Checkin’ Out Chet and his contemporary band, Xtete. Now one of Britain’s top trumpet players, Ceri joins Jeff Barnhart’s British Band at Bude this year.

CHRIS NEWMAN

CLASSIC JAZZ ORCHESTRA (SCOTLAND)

Formed in 2004, the Classic Jazz Orchestra’s mission is to explore the faboulously varied back-catalogue of jazz in an informative, entertaining and professional way. Its remit, however, is to re-interpret, not replicate, jazz styles covering the period from the early 1900s to about 1970. In the first couple of years of its existence, CJO has performed mainly in jazz clubs and festivals, but following the release of its first CD and its enthusiastic endorsement by Humphrey Lyttelton on his BBC Radio2 programme, there is growing interest from theatres, Arts Centres and general music festivals. The band’s first CD, Jelly’s New Clothes, is an innovative and fresh re-examination of some of the works of the first great composer of jazz – Jelly Roll Morton. Indeed, in a remarkably short period, CJO has become established as one of the World’s leading interpreters of Morton’s music, and while that remains the cornerstone of its repertoire, there is also a wealth of material in its library covering such diverse talents as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke, Benny Carter, Benny Goodman, Bob Crosby, Slide Hampton etc. Its breadth of repertoire means that the CJO is ideally placed to present a series of themed programmes without any repetition.
