ALAN BARNES Few eyebrows were raised when Alan Barnes won BBC Radio’s prestigious Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year award in 2001. Born in 1959, Alan’s impressive career has included two years with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, three years with the Tommy Chase Quartet and four years with Humphrey Lyttelton’s Band. His work on clarinet and saxes covers a staggering range and he includes Lester Young, Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins among his heroes. Alan plays with the Craig Milverton Trio this year, with Duke Heitger, John Hallam and Trevor Whiting. www.alanbarnesjazz.com/

Back to top | BEN HOLDER Ben Holder is one of the most gifted and exciting young jazz violinists in the UK. Taught classically from the age of six, he studied at the Birmingham Conservatoire. During his classical studies, Ben began listening to Jazz - classic masters such as Benny Goodman and Oscar Peterson and of course the great jazz violinists including Grappelli, Joe Venuti and the awe inspiring Stuff Smith. Alongside his early studies and later at college he embarked on a detailed analysis of these musicians techniques and the way in which they merged this most classical of instruments into the jazz idiom. He has played on various stages such as The Royal Albert Hall and BBC Radio 2's Friday Night Is Music Night. Ben's innate sense of swing rhythm (something which often eludes classical players) stems from those early listening sessions - and his various awards bear testimony to his abilities. He is the first call jazz violinist for many of the North's top bands and studios.
Back to top | CERI WILLIAMS Ceri Williams (trumpet) studied at the Welsh College of Music & Drama where he became very adept at table football and pool. He has played across all musical genres but is now firmly entrenched in the field of jazz. He started with the Intercity Jazz Band in Birmingham, and he has enjoyed stints with the Beachcombers, Henry's Bootblacks, the Keith Little Band and a whole host of others. He currently has a few projects on the go: The Good Ol' Spit and Dribble Jass Band, Checkin' Out Chet and his contemporary band, Xtete. Now one of Britain’s top trumpet players, Ceri joins Jeff Barnhart’s British Band at Bude this year.

Back to top | CLASSIC JAZZ ORCHESTRA (SCOTLAND) Formed in 2004, the Classic Jazz Orchestra’s mission is to explore the faboulously varied back-catalogue of jazz in an informative, entertaining and professional way. Its remit, however, is to re-interpret, not replicate, jazz styles covering the period from the early 1900s to about 1970. In the first couple of years of its existence, CJO has performed mainly in jazz clubs and festivals, but following the release of its first CD and its enthusiastic endorsement by Humphrey Lyttelton on his BBC Radio2 programme, there is growing interest from theatres, Arts Centres and general music festivals. The band's first CD, Jelly’s New Clothes, is an innovative and fresh re-examination of some of the works of the first great composer of jazz – Jelly Roll Morton. Indeed, in a remarkably short period, CJO has become established as one of the World’s leading interpreters of Morton’s music, and while that remains the cornerstone of its repertoire, there is also a wealth of material in its library covering such diverse talents as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke, Benny Carter, Benny Goodman, Bob Crosby, Slide Hampton etc. Its breadth of repertoire means that the CJO is ideally placed to present a series of themed programmes without any repetition.

Back to top | DAVE MARTIN'S JABBO FIVE Dave Martin's Jabbo Five was formed in May 2010 with the express purpose of playing in the style of Jabbo Smith, whose great recordings, made in 1929, showed him to be a real rival to Louis Armstrong. However the band isn’t restricting itself to the Jabbo repertoire. Jazz fans will also recognise a sprinkling of deservedly popular standards as well as some of the seminal numbers played by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five www.jabbofive.com
Back to top | DENNIS ARMSTRONG'S BRISTOL BLUE FIVE The band plays Classic Jazz of the 1920s. They are particularly inspired by the large body of good music recorded by Clarence Williams. (The band took its name from the Clarence Williams Blue Five.) Dennis’s band, the Stones Syncopators, played this repertoire around Yorkshire in the early 1970s, and it has always been his favourite form of jazz. He has been fortunate to find these musicians from the Bristol area who share his enthusiasm to play in the “old style”.

They decided to form a group, and contacted some of the top players on the dutch New Orleans scene, namely Bas de Jager and the brothers Emile and Jasper van Pelt, who had played together already in the famous La Vida New Orleans Band.
When their mutual friend, the great English saxophonist/singer Jonny Boston moved to Holland, the group was complete and Gumbo Jumbo was born!

Back to top | JAMES EVANS' ROCKET This group is James latest, and was formed at the beginning on 2010.
Like James’ previous groups it features standards as well as a selection of James’ composition. This band has a rather unique sound, partly because is has no double bass, bass lines being played by piano, or guitar, or James himself on bass clarinet. The music is new, but tuneful and has a strong rhythmic presence, in no small part due to the wonderful drumming. Their first album ‘Nice Weather For Ducks’ is out on Raymer Sound. www.jamesevansjazz.co.uk

Formed in the sleepy welsh market town of Monmouth (home to the world famous Rockfield Studios), the band have worked hard to become the leading jump jive act in south east Wales and are guaranteed to make any gig go with a bang. The and faithfully recreate the music that was all the rage in the 1940’s and 50’s and the current play list includes many of the hits that had audiences rocking and rolling in the aisles years before rock and roll had even been thought of. Compositions by the jump jive greats, Louis Jordan, Cab Calloway and Louis Prima feature widely in the set along with more contemporary work by artists such as Brian Setzer and it's all tied together with a light hearted, tongue in cheek delivery between numbers www.jiveoholics.co.uk
Back to top | THE LUIS RUSSELL STORY Luis Russell (6 August 1902 - 11 December 1963) was a jazz pianist and bandleader. He was born on Careening Cay, near Panama, in a family of Afro-Caribbean ancestry. His father was a music teacher, and young Luis learned to play violin, guitar, trombone, and piano. He began playing professionally accompanying silent film by 1917 and later at a casino in Colón, Panama. In 1919 he won $3000 in a lottery, and used it to move to the United States with his mother and sister, settling in New Orleans. He began performing with New Orleans bands, and took lessons on New Orleans style jazz piano from Steve Lewis. He played with Albert Nicholas's band, then moved to Chicago in1924. In Chicago he played with Doc Cook and King Oliver, in addition to occasional jobs under his own name and pick up bands in recording studios. With Oliver's band Russell moved to New York City in May of 1927. In October of that year he left Oliver to start his own band. Russell's band became one of the top jazz groups in New York. It was borrowed for gigs and recording dates by such jazz notables as Red Allen, Jelly Roll Morton, and Louis Armstrong; Armstrong wound up taking over the band as front man in 1929 although Russell remained the music director. Between 1926 and 1934, Russell recorded only 38 sides (mostly using his own name), plus those issued under Henry "Red" Allen (1929) and a handful where Louis Armstrong fronted his band. Of these, his 1929-1930 OKeh sides are considered jazz milestones.
Back to top | THE RED HOT JAZZ FOUR Playing the music of Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Johnny Dodds and Sidney Bechet, garnished with King Oliver and George Mitchell, this will prove to be a feast of fine jazz.
Back to top | THE STEVE STEINHAUS SWING BAND Fronted by the big voice and personality of Chicago born and bred Steve Steinhaus (who also fronts Dr Teeth), the band features an exceptionally rockin' rhythm section with a dynamite brass duo to boot. The set is spiced up with some great blues, soul, funk and 50s rock and roll tunes - think of the Ratpack jamming with The Commitments in a Chicago blues joint owned by Elvis and you'll start to get the picture. The band swings its way through a wide repertoire including everything from soul classics through to the Big Bopper and back to the bluesy boogie of Louis Prima and Louis Jordan. The name may say "Swing" band, but this lot will take the roof off the joint given half of chance!

Back to top | TOM LANGHAM Justly famed for his mellow crooning and virtuoso banjo and guitar playing, Spats was born in 1971 and is thus a tad younger than the general run of U.K. traditional jazz musicians (a tad in this case being around thirty years!). He remembers first being taken with the music at the age of ten upon hearing the Temperance Seven (with whom he has subsequently played on several occasions). He became a professional musician in his early twenties, since when he has played with almost everybody of note on the traditional jazz scene, most recently touring Australia as a duo with Martin Litton and embarking on a band leading career with his own bands Hot Combination and Hot Fingers.

Back to top | TREVOR WHITING After initially learning tenor horn in the school brass band at the age of eleven, Trevor Whiting (reeds) heard recordings of New Orleans clarinettist Sidney Bechet and immediately decided to switch instrument. This was the beginning of a lifelong passion for jazz in its various forms. By the mid eighties he had formed his own group the ‘Swingtet’ which featured notable musicians such as trumpeter Ray Crane, pianist Martin Litton, guitarist Paul Sealey and drummer John Armatage. Trevor has often enjoyed working and recording with visiting Americans including Al Casey, Art Hodes, Scott Hamilton, Marty Gross and many others, in between a busy free-lance schedule. In recent years he has appeared live and on recordings with new vocal star Clare Teal. In January 2003 he toured Germany and Holland with the Big Chris Barber Band. He appears at Bude this year with Keith Nichols in Jazz Away from Home, and renewing his partnership with Alan Barnes.

Back to top | ZOE SCHWARZ AND ROB KORAL Zoe (vocals) and Rob’s (guitar) musical partnership has been going strong these past five years, during this period they have covered a lot of musical ground, initially performing in local wine bars and progressing quickly to established gigs such as Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express-Dean St., Stables-Wavendon, Lighthouse-Poole etc. Coming from different musical beginnings, Zoe's being from a formal classical background and Rob from a bluesier upbringing, seems to work to their advantage in that it creates a chemistry in terms of combining musical sensitivity and sensibility. This has manifested itself in their careful choice of standard tunes and their ability to write strong and concise original compositions. www.zoeschwarz.info
